Whilst lots of the research process has gone online, lab notebooks remain stubbornly analogue in many disciplines. Electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) can enable data to be copied directly from instruments, facilitate searching and collaboration, but they also come with their own challenges of interoperability and preservation. This conversation explores the practical uses of ELNs in the research process and beyond, and whether they can help researchers in a range of subjects to validate and share data and conclusions.
