Children, Technology and Play Data Management Protocols 1 Family case studies For each family, files are grouped according to medium (video, audio transcription, photos (including photos of child drawings) and ordered chronologically by date of recording (or, occasionally, date file received by project team). The original audio files have been deleted following transcription. 1.1 Filenames Filename comprises the following elements: * Family number (F1, F2, etc.) * Letter to denote whether file is child-generated (c)/parent-generated (p)/researcher-generated (r) * Date (YYYYMMDD) * Format (v=video, a=audio, at=audio transcription, p=photo, d=drawing (though this is a digital surrogate of the physical drawing) * Sequential number (to 3 figures, starting at 001 for each date) Examples: F1r_20190806_v001 F1 = Family 1 r = researcher-produced (researcher name(s) listed in spreadsheet) 20190806 = 6 Aug 2019 v = video 1 from this date F10c_20191023_d001 F10 = Family 10 c = child-produced d = drawing Note – the suffix c, p or r following the Family designation (F1, F2 etc) results in all the child-generated files for each family automatically being grouped first (in date order), then the parent-generated files then the research-generated files. The media files themselves therefore appear slightly differently from the spreadsheet where they are listed strictly in chronological order. 1.2 GoPro films and photos Usually made by child or occasionally parent. Where exact date of filming not known, they have been catalogued with the date of the visit that they were collected from the family, e.g. F7c_20191009_v001 For GoPro photos taken in Burst Mode, examples have been selected which are in focus, depict something unique from other photos, and as far as can be discerned, frame a move in play. 1.3 WhatsApp data (i.e. family photos and films shared with the project team) These will have been taken on a variety of dates. The date embedded in the filename therefore indicates the date on which they file was sent to the project team. 2 Focus Group Interviews 2.1 Filenames For each school, files have been according to medium (audio, audio transcription, image file) and ordered chronologically by date file created. NB The original audio files have been deleted following transcription. Name comprises the following elements: * School initials based on school pseudonym: o AP = Abbeycliff Primary o BI = Beaconsfield Infant o HPA = Honor Park Academy o MP = Meadow Banks Primary o WP = Woodbridge Primary * Date (YYYYMMDD) * Format (a=audio, at=audio transcription; p=photo, d=drawing though this may be a photograph or scan of the drawing) * Sequential number (to 3 figures, start at 001 for each date) Example: MP_20191006_at001 (Focus group at Meadow Banks Primary that took place on 6 Oct 2019 audio transcription) 3 Telephone interviews with parents 3.1 Filenames These comprise transcriptions made from the original audio files. The original audio files have been deleted following transcription. Filename comprises the following elements: * TP (Telephone Parent) + Participant number to two digits * Date (YYYYMMDD) * Format (at=audio transcription) * Sequential number (to 3 figures, starting at 001 for each date) Example: TP01_20191128_at001 2
