The dataset contains data extrapolated from the letters of Pope Gregory VII (d. 1085), based on the English translation by H. Cowdrey. Year/month/date columns – these record the date in which each letter was sent. Book/number – these record the place of each letter in Gregory VII’s Register. Place – this column records the destination of each letter Point/region – this column records whether the location of the letter was a particular place or a general region Locate_As – this column shows how the location was mapped, if the actual destination could not be shown on a map Recipient – this column records the social status of the letter’s recipient Clerical/Secular – this column records whether the recipient was a cleric or a secular person Individual/Several/Group – this column records whether the recipient was a particular person, a group of particular people, or a general group Location of pope – this column records where the pope sent the letter from Locate_as_pope – this column shows how the pope’s location was mapped, if the actual location could not be mapped Number of words - this column records the number of words in the letter (estimate based on English translation) Gender – this column records the gender of the recipient Encouragement – this column records the tone of the letter Revisit – this column recorded notes in the creation of the data (now blank) Notes – this column records any relevant contextual information Lat/Lon/Geo – these columns record the longitudes and latitudes of the locations mentioned Data compiled by George Litchfield with supervision by Charles West and Tom Stafford, July 2020.
